M Pharm Overview:

DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACEUTICS:

This program was introduced in 1996. The course content is methodically structured and designed to prepare the students for a career in academia as well as pharmaceutical industry. In addition to this, the program empowers students to continue pursue higher studies and research activities. Pharmaceutical biotechnology is a relatively new and growing field in which the principles of biotechnology are applied to the development of drugs. A majority of therapeutic drugs in the current market are bioformulations, such as antibodies, nucleic acid products and vaccines.

Such bioformulations are developed through several stages that include: understanding the principles underlying health and disease; the fundamental molecular mechanisms governing the function of related biomolecules; synthesis and purification of the molecules; determining the product shelf life, stability, toxicity and immunogenicity; drug delivery systems; patenting; and clinical trials. The programme aims to enhance students methodological and problem-solving skills in the fields of medical and pharmaceutical biotechnology. Courses also highlight the interdisciplinary links between the natural science, biological, medical and technological aspects of biotechnology, as well as stressing the importance of quality assurance considerations.

CAREER PROSPECTS:
The Master programme Pharmaceutical Biotechnology was developed to give graduates a well-founded knowledge of biomedicine and skills and competences needed for the development and production of biotechnological products.
Graduates from this Master programme will mainly work in pharmaceutical and biotechnological companies and medical research centers.

POSSIBLE WORK AREAS:
  • Planning and conducting of biotechnological processes (fermentation)
  • Biomedical and analytical testing
  • Coordinative activities in production, quality control, registration of pharmaceutical products and also to subject-specific marketing and distribution.

    DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACEUTICAL CHEMISTRY:

This program was introduced in 2001. The course content is methodically structured and designed to prepare the students for a career in academia as well as pharmaceutical industry. In addition to this, the program empowers students to continue pursue higher studies and research activities.
The syllabus of postgraduate program provides theoretical knowledge in variety of topics related to drug design, advanced topics in medicinal chemistry, organic chemistry, process chemistry and analytical techniques in the first year of their academic career. The practical exercises that have been framed helps the students to get practical skills in diverse areas like analytical techniques, drug synthesis, natural product isolation, physicochemical properties, separation techniques etc. Seminars are part of the training program and it provides opportunity to develop good communication and presentation skills. In the second year of their academic program, the students are given opportunity to carry out dissertation in industry as well as reputed National laboratories.
    SCOPE OF THE PROGRAM:
Pharmaceutical Chemistry is a stimulating discipline which links many scientific disciplines and allows for collaboration with researchers from other disciplines like biologists, toxicologists, pharmacologists, theoretical chemists, microbiologists, and bio-pharmacists in developing new drugs. One can place himself/herself in a competitive position by having strong background in organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry.
This discipline offers a wide variety of job opportunities in academic environment pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device companies, government agencies, research laboratories. The expertise of Pharmaceutical Chemists is utilized in improving the process by which pharmaceuticals are made and thereby develop the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly process. Analytical pharmaceutical chemists are very much sought by the pharmaceutical industries for their skills in critically analyzing and manipulating the properties of drugs. Pharmaceutical chemists are involved developing stringent analytical methods to the product for ensuring purity and develop analytical methods that will be useful for toxicological and pharmacological investigations.

    CORE COMPETENCIES:
  • Molecular modelling based drug design
  • Advanced organic synthesis
  • In-vitro safety studies
  • Analytical method development
  • Metabolic stability studies
  • Screening of drug candidates for antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticancer activity.

  • Approval Process 2021-22-Extension of Approval (EoA)

  • Pharmacy Council of India 2021-22

  • Shivaji University Approval
